The Mutable Self

Self Portrait 2 (4)_1.jpg

The Mutable Self is an exploration of the human body’s fluid identity.

Deconstructing, reimagining, and reassembling , Grounds dissects her own body, both physically and conceptually, and relentlessly reconfigures it, highlighting its ever-changing form.

Each "Self" represents a potential version of who Grounds might be. Using photography, sculpture, film and installation, she experiments with blending and transforming her body.

Her creations are inherently the same yet different. Layered, encased, shrunk and enlarged, these differences to her body alter everything, challenging our fixed notions of identity.

These multi-media works are uniquely adapted to each space they inhabit, emphasizing how human identity is constantly shaped by context, environment, and time. How do we modify our bodies to fit in? How do we stretch, pull, and distort ourselves in pursuit of acceptance?

Rooted in feminist thought, The Mutable Self recognizes gender and identity as social constructs. Grounds invites viewers to contemplate the mutable nature of identity and how it is influenced by situation, perception, and time. Her work sparks a broader conversation about acceptance, diversity, and the power of multiplicity. Each iteration, each site, each configuration uncovers new facets of bodily dialogue, mirroring the infinite ways we are understood, misunderstood, and constantly evolving.
